VOCAL-NY is looking to take direct action THIS Thursday, 05/11/23, by having a press conference and vigil in response to the lethal and irresponsible narratives toughted by New York’s Mayor and Governor that has reinforced a system of negligence and emboldened the type of anti-Black, self-deputized vigilantism responsible for the murder of Brother Jordan Neely. Unfortunately, this tragedy is not unique; that is what is frightening and unacceptable about this moment. Jordan Neely’s murder brings to light a culmination of the dangers of anti-Blackness, criminalization of poverty, a homelessness crisis and the austerity-led budgets that strip communities of basic care like housing, healthcare and food. We are calling for ACCOUNTABILITY.
We believe accountability must include more than just charges for his murderer but expand to address a system that has been intentionally set up to disenfranchise, harm and lethally maim people who are disproportionately Black & Brown, poor, and undocumented, disabled, and even — hungry. In addition to Jordan Neely, in 2022, 815 New Yorkers experiencing homelessness died in public spaces, as a direct result of the sustained political, systemic abandonment and dehumanization. We hope that you all will commit to joining us in bringing honor to them all and uplift demands of sensical policies that could have made a difference for someone like Jordan, as others to come.
